The church, founded in 1114 at the time of the Norman Count Goffredo II, was completely rebuilt by the architect Giuseppe Zimbalo by the will of Bishop Luigi Pappacoda from 1659. The building, built with the typical limestone Lecce, which gives brightness and chiaroscuro effect to the wall surfaces, was named after the Assumption of the Virgin in heaven. The three-aisle structure with mighty pillars and arches is suggested by the tripartite façade with fluted pilasters. At the same time belongs the adjoining bell tower, which served for geodetic measurements in the nineteenth century. The choir sings Christmas songs. Music is magical, and everything is illuminated. There are lights everywhere, candles everywhere, garlands, ribbons and trees everywhere. The colors of Christmas dazzle, and the cold recalls that Christmas has just arrived. This is the Midnight Mass. It is mystical, magical and for the faithful it will never be truly Christmas without having participated to this unique yearly event.

In the small town of San Donato, a few kilometers from Lecce, on the gentle slope of a Serra, every year relives the charm and excitement of the Holy Christmas in the engaging atmosphere of the Living Nativity. In a beautiful natural setting and in the heart of the historic center a small Bethlehem has been set up to preserve the millennial rhythms of the time.
The Crib represents a continuous succession of emotions arising from contact with reality now lost and far from our everyday life. The volunteers of the Association work for months for this magnificent realization and for the 200 people that bring this Christmas Nativity to life. A unique detail of this Nativity is that the route winds through paths and houses which make up the Museum of Popular Traditions.
